Compliance at the desktop

The process of compliance editing has traditionally involved significant amounts of tape duplication and transportation of physical media around organisations. This could mean managing the logistics of moving tapes around anything from one building to many international locations. This naturally involves significant cost, even before considering the implications of the time spent transporting tapes, and the significant possibility of data loss.

Pharos Mediator delivers the workflow needed to perform a compliance check of material at the desktop, and edit where necessary. Once material has been identified as requiring compliance editing, the areas of concern are frame-accurately marked using Mediator comments. For example, material could be marked for incidents of smoking, sexual content, nudity or drugs references. These markers remain with the material for the full life cycle of the asset.

Mediator also integrates technical and editorial compliance workflows with third-party scheduling and traffic systems. Compliance decisions can now be made in conjunction with the advanced schedule, channel, region or watershed standards and practices for multichannel operations. Mediator can also flag up specific audience and channel watershed times to compliance operators as they can download the schedule into Mediator.

Compliance editing

For a simple compliance edit, it is perfectly possible that the automation system is able to perform all the necessary adjustments during playout. Alternatively, for more complex edits, the material to be compliance checked is delivered to a non-linear editor. When Mediator sends the material to a non-linear editor, the markers as also sent, reducing the amount of time spent by the material in an edit suite.

Pharos supports many editors including

  • Final Cut Pro
  • Avid

More efficient compliance

Using Pharos Mediator Browse and metadata at the desktop offers significant time-saving over stand alone NLE, tape or DVD based compliance operations. Mediator can manage compliance in parallel with promotions and multi-language operations to provide a very efficient workflow. Managing compliance within Mediator workflows reduces errors or mistakes which result in delays and penalties for broadcasters and service providers.

Mediator also provides a complete audit trail for all compliance editing on a clip-by-clip basis so that recurring problems can be reviewed and changes to compliance procedures can be implemented in a controlled manner.
